New Music Round-Up: Dua Lipa, Skepta, Tom Walker, Craig David
A whole lot of huge singles and albums for you to digest through this week – there’s definitely something for everyone. From 90s house throwbacks to grime, from pop mastery to alternative-indie – this new music round-up won’t disappoint.
SINGLES
Silk City & Dua Lipa – ‘Electricity’
Diplo and Mark Ronson come together again under their Silk City moniker – this time channelling Dua Lipa’s incredible vocal talent to create a 90s-house throwback tune. The project overall sees them taking inspiration from distinct eras of dance music from all around the world to reinterpret them through a modern lens – and ‘Electricity’, with its steamy music video, is another amazing result of this.
Dizzee Rascal – ‘Money Right’ (Ft. Skepta)
A Grime collaboration of monumental scale – Dizzee and Skepta coming together on a track was always going to be GOLDEN. Dizzee proves the strength of his bars and there’s consistent fire from Skepta – we needn’t say anymore, just don’t sleep on this one.
Dua Lipa – ‘Want To’
Yes – MORE new Dua Lipa. With the announcement of a Super Deluxe Edition of her debut album coming soon, she revealed that on top of the Silk City collab she has 3 more new songs – 'Want To', 'Running' and collaboration with K-Pop girlgroup BLACKPINK 'Kiss and Make Up'.
Sigala, Ella Eyre & Meghan Trainor – ‘Just Got Paid’ (Ft. French Montana)
Rounding off the end of the season, another bombastic summer anthem bop. This combo is huge and not to be missed.
Mahalia – ‘Surprise Me’
Birmingham based singer, songwriter Mahalia delivers a stripped back, raw laid-back track. Gentle, emotive guitars and bluesy horns are given a close-eyed R&B spin whilst Mahalia’s vocals ride the vibe and prove to carry real earnestness.
MK & Jonas Blue & Becky Hill – ‘Back And Forth’
An upbeat record led by MK’s warm piano-house style, combined with Becky Hill’s soulful songwriting and incredible vocal, paired with the instinctive pop sensibility of Jonas Blue makes this a collaborative recipe that is sure to please across the board.
Tom Walker – 'Angels'
His track ‘Leave a Light On’ has blown up to stratospheric proportions, and now he’s returned with the more subdued, powerful track ‘Angels’.
Nile Rodgers & Chic – 'Sober' (Ft. Craig David & Stefflon Don)
Overwhelmed by the amount of names on this cut? So same. What a massive studio session to have been in. Together they’ve delivered a track which takes cues from 90s R&B and new jack swing to be beaming with life and charisma. Craig David carries the choruses with his charm, and Stefflon Don adds flavour to this incredibly funky track.
Jessie Reyez – ‘F*** Being Friends’
After having recently featured on Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’s collaboration ‘Promises’, Jessie Reyez has dropped a brand new, super unique single ‘F*** Being Friends. Jumping between singing and almost rapped verse, she rides with the beat
Logic – ‘Everybody Dies’
On this new track Logic goes IN. This track acts as Logic planting his flag and reminding everyone where he stands in the rap game. Oh and - “I’m sitting on 5 unreleased albums” should be a treat to hear for fans.
Noah Cyrus – ‘Mad At You’ (Ft. Gallant)
A track that screams emotion from the truly fantastic vocals supplied by both Noah Cyrus and Gallant.
Jennifer Hudson – ‘I’ll Fight’
You can tell summer’s coming to a close – because the slower, more emotive ballads are coming out. This new Jennifer Hudson track is no exception, check it out now.
Lukas Graham – ‘Love Someone’
In the run-up to his October coming album, Lukas Graham takes an honest, intimate look at human emotions with ‘Love Someone’. Graham initially blew up in 2016 with the hit ‘7 Years’, and now returns in full force.
Machine Gun Kelly – ‘Rap Devil’
Eminem took shots at just about everyone on his new album Kamikaze – the first to respond, however, was Machine Gun Kelly. He delivers an actually rather fierce reply to the ‘Rap God’, from his own angle as the ‘Rap Devil’.
NSG - ‘Natural Disaster’
One more dance-inspiring bop for the end of summer!
Maverick Sabre – ‘Drifting’
If ethereal and spacey and emotive, yet upbeat with interesting electronic production sounds up your street, check out this brand-new track from Maverick Sabre.
Sugar Cane – ‘Shakka’
Coming off of his big summer tune ‘Man Down’ featuring AlunaGeorge, this addition to his arsenal is more of a laid-back dance bop – check it out now.
Another Sky – 'CHILLERS'
A very energy-driven upbeat alternative-indie track from the upcoming artists.
ALBUMS
Hozier – 'Nina Cried Power EP'
Irish singer, songwriter Hozier returns after four years he returns with a four track EP that intends to give a taste of the different sides to him, before he approaches a Sophomore project. ‘Nina Cried Power’ is filled with.. well a lot of power and dynamism, where ‘Shrike’ is a beautifully played string piece, filled with raw emotion.
Jack Back (aka David Guetta) – 'Jack Back Mixtape'
David Guetta has adopted the new moniker Jack Back to reach back into his underground roots – and has put out a 12-track mixtape of house, deep house and some tracks even taking an industrial angle. About the project he said, in interview with Pete Tong "I originally started in underground house music, playing all the raves and underground clubs in Paris […] I wanted to make music just for fun, with absolutely no commercial approach to it” If you believe David Guetta can only do pop-dance tracks, listen to this immediately.
Maribou State – 'Kingdoms in Colour'
English electronic music duo Maribou State return with an album absolutely full of colour and, what’s more, life. This is highlighted on tracks like ‘Feel Good’ (Feat Khruangbin), filled with a blossoming warmth that is coloured with some more uneasy, darker tones. This results in tracks that breathe freely and paint complex pictures to be unravelled.
MNEK – 'Language'
MNEK has been on the scene for far longer than you probably realise – having written huge tracks like Beyoncé’s ‘Hold Up’, Dua Lipa’s ‘IDGAF’ and Madonna’s ‘Hold Tight’. Now, Language is finally his own space to show his vision of pop, filled with complexity, layers, unconventional structures, beat changes and unexpected twists and turns in the flow between songs.
The Blaze – 'Dancehall'
French production duo The Blaze’s direction has always been one of evoking a raw sense of humanity with electronic dance music. Their 2017 EP Territory proved it possible, and this new project Dancehall goes to extend that direction over the course of a whole length album. This shines through best on haunting tracks like ‘SHE’ and ‘FACES’.
A2 – 'Purple'
Heavy trap vibes but with a UK touch – this Octavian, Yxng Bane and Suspect featuring project has a whole lot of fire to give. Highlights include the vibes intro track ‘Flex Luthor’ and banger ‘Flair’.
That's all folks!
