Halsey Responds To Buzzfeed Article About Her Sexuality: ‘Sorry I’m Not Gay Enough For You’

The singer is not happy with the analysis of her sexuality.

Halsey has responded to a recent article in which her sexuality was discussed in regards to her continuing rise in the mainstream music industry - An article which appearedto suggest that the industry has impacted on how she expresses or 'presents'her sexuality.

Taking to Twitter to take issue with the ‘bi-erasure’ tones in the piece, Halsey, who is openly bisexual, explained thatshe’s tired of the ‘anaylsis of her one year in the public eye’.

The Buzzfeed feature, titled ‘What Does A Queer Pop Star Look Like In2016?’ lookedat how Halsey ‘performs her sexuality’ in the music industry, analysing her music videos, the pronouns used in her lyrics and her collaborations with ‘hyper-exposed men’ and discussing whether her goals of ‘battling heteronormativity’ have changed.

In one point about her VMAs performance with The Chainsmokers, for example, the article says: “Her VMAs outfit, however, was one of her most traditionally feminine picks: sparkly white bell bottoms and a tiny matching crop top showing a peek of underboob, the look topped off with a plain long brown wig. She and [Andrew] Taggart might have looked like an unremarkable straight couple to anyone who didn’t know better.

“[…] There could be any number of reasons why that particular performance of that particular song looked and felt the way it did. [...] In the name of mass exposure, might Halsey be experimenting with toning down the queerness of her image?”

In another point, the author wrote: “Hanging with a lot of dudes, and gender-fluid people like Ruby, is another way in which Halsey raises complicated questions about her constructed identity,” questioning whether Halsey is a ‘one-of-the-boys kind of girl’ or ‘a classic Lez Bro’.

Raising important points about bi-erasure in some powerful (butnow-deleted) tweets, Halsey responded to the piece, writing: “well @BuzzFeed sorry I’m not gay enough for you.

“tiresome analysis of my 1 year in the public eye and the ignorance of 8+ years of sexual discovery to determine if I’m truly queer. [And it] is part of a mentality so engrained in the erasure of bisexual “credibility” even within the lgbt community.

“Going so far as to weigh my number of male vs female friends to determine if I’m a “lez bro” or just a big hetero slut."

She ended her response by writing:“You’ve been an ally and this article just makes me sad. Even in its laughable self awareness of its own stereotyping.”
