You might recognise Halsey's name as one of the featured artists on Justin Bieber's record-breaking album, 'Purpose'. But she's hear to tell you she's more than that, and how she's going to be the name on everyone's lips in2016.

The 21-year-old singer songwriter from New Jersey is our MTV Push artist of the month, but success hasn't come easily.

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (Halsey's real name) was a bit of a rebel at school, she explains to us during her MTV Push interview: "When I was in high school I was a bad kid and a good student."

She would get good grades but wear unconventional school uniform, much like many artists, she felt she didn't quite fit in.

Growing up in this environment she's toughened to the judgement of others, she explains: "You don't have a lot of time to show people who you are, and if they don't like it you can't care."

When she didn't get into art college, Halsey calls it a "crushing reality", shesoon found herself enrolledonto a creative song writing course.

With her rebellious streak coming through, her studies didn't last long. When lecturers told her how good she was atsong writing she did what she thought was right, and dropped out.

2016 is going to be a big year for Halsey, but last year was also huge, mainly because she dropped her debut album. She said: "My first album was called 'Badlands'and it's something that I think I'm most proud of having done in my life."

"I just want people to listen to my music and believe it" she adds. Here's someone that puts their all into the music they write, and Halsey truly embodies this notion.

"Even if you can't relate to what I'm singing, I hope you can believe in it and see it as something that it is real. I consider myself a narrator to my life and to the characters in it."
