Wiz Khalifa, Steve Aoki, Jess Glynne & Clean Bandit Shut Down Malta For Isle Of MTV’s 10th Anniversary
Ten years old and showing no sign of stopping, Isle Of MTV last night (28th June) celebrated a decade of bringing the noise to Malta with an insane live gig featuring Wiz Khalifa, Steve Aoki, Jess Glynne and Clean Bandit for its tenth anniversary special.
Live streamed around the globe online and via Facebook Live, tens of thousands of music lovers descended onto the baking hot Il-Fosos Square in Floriana for yet another spectacular open air live show showcasing some of the biggest names in music right now…all for free.
Early on, getting the thousands primed for an unforgettable night, Club MTV’s R3WIRE & Varski kicked things off with a high energy DJ set before handing over to this year’s MTV Breaks DJ competition winner Taleena and local alt rockers Airport Impressions.
Of our main acts, after being introduced by our host Becca Dudley,Clean Bandit were first to the stage opening with ‘Real Love’ and reeling out hit after hit from their debut album including ’Stronger’, ‘Extraordinary’ plus their covers of 90s floor fillers ‘U Sure Do’ and ‘Show Me Love’. Their brand new single ‘Tears’ went down a storm but it was of course their huge No.1 ‘Rather Be’ which brought the metaphorical roof down as they came to the end of their set.
Next up, Clean Bandit pal Jess Glynne, joined by her energetic live band had the 50,000 strong crowd chanting back every word of her infectious tunes including ‘Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself’, ‘Ain’t Got Far To Go’, ‘My Love’ and a storming cover of Chaka Khan’s classic ‘I Feel For You’. Taking the tempo down a touch for her ballad ‘Take Me Home’, an "honoured" Jess told the crowd she how incredible the packed Square looked before her massive feel good track ‘Hold My Hand’ saw her set come to a euphoric and glitter-stewn climax.
But as the sun set, the crowd were chanting for a certain U.S. rapper - Wiz Khalifa. Cool as a cucumber backstage, Wiz burst into being as he stepped into the spotlight opening his set with ‘Black & Yellow’ and bowling straight into ‘We Dem Boyz’, ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’ and the global phenomenon that is ‘See You Again’. Wiz also treated us to some of his newer material too including ‘Pull Up’, ‘Bake Sale’ and ‘All Night’ before hyping the crowd up for his closer - the classic ‘Young, Wild & Free’.
Closing the show, under the mesmerising giant LED cubes on our stage, Steve Aoki stepped up to the plate for a rip-roaring finale of EDM madness. And yes he threw cakes. Lots of them.
A pure hour of devastating drops and hands-in-the-air bangers, the DJ threw in some brand new tunes including his recent blink-182 remix of ‘Bored To Death’ and ‘Back 2 U’ as well as slipping in some aural cameos from Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers and more.
But if you’ve seen an Aoki show before, when the opening beats of ‘Cake Face’ start you know what’s coming. Heading out into the crowd Steve smashed huge cakes into the faces of anyone who begged for it. Hilarious and bewildering at the same time, you’ve never seen so many people genuinely ecstatic having been covered in baked goods.
All in all, with incredible production and a line up to die for, it was an EPIC night and we can’t wait to do it all over again.
'You'll be able to watch highlights from the show later this summer with MTV World Stage.'
