F**k It Friday: Lena Dunham
HELLO THERE. Welcome back to F**k It Friday - a weekly feature from MTV Breaks that’s all about saying a big “f**k yeah” to the most excellent people who’ve said “f**k it” (probably) and taken a leap of faith to make big things happen.
Cos it’s not about just having ideas – it’s about believing in yourself, and making them happen. AMIRIGHT?
So who’s next up in the FIF roll call of honour, drumroll… it’s actress, writer, director, producer, EVERYTHING-er, Lena Dunham!
Today is Lena Dunham’s birthday (HBD LENNY!), so who better for Fuck It Friday than her, a woman who has spent her entire career with two fingers up to the world and a “f**k it” attitude towards gender inequality and sexual repression. Just one glance at her awesome Lenny newsletter or a single episode of Girls is enough to see, Lena is one of our people!
Her first “f**k it” moment came in her early days though. One of her first experiences writing and directing was a web-series called Delusional Downtown Divas, a (hilarious) show poking not-so-gentle fun at the New York art scene she had been raised and found herself working in.
Unfortunately the only people who would feature the show, Index Magazine, were unable to pay. Lena and her best friends/co-stars didn’t have a great deal of money but they believed in the idea and wanted to get it made, so they “f**k it” (probably), worked any small jobs they could, pooled all their money in the world and took a leap of faith on the project.
The project achieved something of a cult-following and lead Lena onto the many, many awesome things she’s done since. All because she said “f**k it” (probably) and gave everything to a project she believed in. Lena Dun-good! F**k yeah!
