Lana Condor Opens Up About Her Past Experience With Body Dysmorphia

"I know what it's like to have an eating disorder"

Lana Condor has opened up about her previous struggle with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder.

The To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before actor gave an interview to Elle Canada where she revealed that becoming a trained dancer at such a young age caused her to have some very real struggles with body image.

She said: “I know what it’s like to have an eating disorder and body dysmorphia—and also what it’s like to be a friend to someone who has that.”

Lana added that women in particular are held to such impossibly high beauty standards that it’s no wonder so many of them spend their formative years feeling unhappy about their appearance.

“I look at my friends, and I’m like, ‘You’re fucking gorgeous.’ But they feel like they’re fat and ugly. I don’t know how this happened, that women feel like they need to apologize [for their physical imperfections].”

Now that the 21-year-old has a healthier relationship with her body and her approach to food, she’s determined to ensure that other young people out there realise that beauty comes in all different shapes and sizes.

“I think it’s time to give people comfort. You have to eat. You have to stop thinking that a certain body shape is ideal, because it’s not,” she pointed out. “That’s why I literally post about every meal I eat.”
