This Ancient Peru City Is Taking On Machu Picchu With A Cable Car
Move over Machu Picchu, because there’s a new (old) ancient city in Peru - and visitors won’t even have to hike to get there, thanks to the opening of a brand new cable car last month.
The citadel city of Kuelap has been largely overshadowed by gap year fave Machu Picchu in the past, despite being much older than the Incan remains, and one of the largest ancient monuments in the Americas.
Facts and stats fans listen up, you’ll like this nextbit.
Located on the slopes of the Andes in Northern Peru, Kuelap was the political hub of the Chachapoyas civilisation (try saying that five times real fast) from about 900 to 1400 AD, with its fortress - that is estimated to have covered around 25,000 square miles when it was intact - sitting 10,000 feet above sea level.
Now the new cable car system will take you right to the top in just 20 minutes - although if you have a fear of heights you might want to give it a miss… you’ll be suspended up to 6,560 feet in the air. Gulp.
Want to go? Well, first you’ll have to book a flight to Peru, but after that it’ll only set you back approx $6 for a cable car ticket. Machu Picch-who? (just kidding, still want to go see both real bad).
