Get To Know: Wet Leg
Rhian and Hester first met at music college while playing in other bands before playing together and eventually forming Wet Leg.
Inspired by their love of The Ronettes, Jane Birkin, Ty Segall and Björk, they’ve now found a home at legendary label Domino, home to the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip, Blood Orange, Franz Ferdinand and Cat Power. Their debut single and accompanying video 'Chaise Longue' has recently created a buzz, gaining over 1 million views online. With some tour support slots, solo UK dates and hopefully more music coming soon we can’t wait to see what Wet Leg come up with next!
1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
We are Rhian and Hester from the Isle of Wight, we’ve been friends for ages, and started making music for Wet Leg around late 2018.
2. Who/what inspired you to start a career in music?
I think living on the Island probably had something to do with it. As teenagers we’d get to go to Bestival and Isle of Wight Festival so you’d get to see loads of music for just those two weekends then you have the rest of the year to daydream about being a rockstar.
Earlier on, we were making more folky-inspired music, we loved Laura Marling and Joanna Newsom, but we were inspired by bands like The Strokes and Kings of Leon when we started Wet Leg.
3. Who are your biggest musical influences?
Between us we listen to heaps of different music, but bands we’re equally obsessed with are Big Thief, The Garden, The Strokes, Best Coast, Kings of Leon… The Chats… loads more…
4. Tell us about the writing and recording process of your new release…
It was written late at night at Hester's flat, during a sixweek long sleepover. Hester's boyfriend, Joshua, put down a drum beat and fuzzy synth bass line, and Rhian freestyled the lyrics mostly in one hit, possibly while sitting on said chaise longue. We recorded the final version with Jon McMullen in south London.
5. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Everything has felt so surreal, playing Latitude Festival was so amazing as we had no idea whether anyone would come to see us, but they did and sang along to 'Chaise Longue' with us, which was very unexpected!
6. Who would you be your dream collaboration and why?
Silk Sonic. Why!? Well duh 🙄
7.Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
Yes. Holiday Ghosts. We stumbled across them playing at a festival and then my friend next to me in the crowd said he knew them and offered to introduce me to them and I was SO weird around them. I put my face in my hands and ran away like a shy toddler.
8. If you could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of time what would it be and why?
'Yes Sir I Can Boogie' - Baccara. It’s our internal theme song.
9. What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
S Club 7 - 'Reach'. Banger.
10. What can we expect from your live shows?
We haven’t got too many gigs under our belts yet, so it’s kind of new to us too, but we do have a bunch of songs, that sound a bit different from 'Chaise Longue'...
11. Have you got any fun livestreams/online events planned for this year? / When can we see you live?
There’s not too much to see online at the moment, but we’ve got real life gigs happening! We’re so lucky to be joining some amazing bands for some dates in the coming months, with Declan McKenna, Willie J Healey, Inhaler, and we’ve got our first mainland headline slot coming up in October.
