Get To Know: Yizzy
Yizzy makes grime that is unapologetically grime.
The popularisation and new international appeal of grime has had the genre undertake a paradigm shift into the mainstream, which has done amazing things for the genre and its artists – but with that has been an unmistakeable change in sound and style.
Yizzy, however, creates grime that feels rooted in that original sound. The 18-year-old’s interpretation of grime is one that is as old as he is. Sonically, his sound is powerful and raw with beats that have the rhythmic aggression that grime originally took from its UK garage and jungle roots.
By taking us back to the origins of grime and exploring them from his youthful lens, Yizzy breathes fresh air into the genre.
Listen to his track ‘BAP’ and then Get To Know Yizzy in our introducing interview below…
1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
My name is Yizzy, I'm 18 years old and I'm a grime artist from Lewisham, South East London.
2) Describe your sound in three words…
Energetic, melodical, witty.
3) Who inspired you to start a career in music?
A couple of my friends from school told me if I believed I could do music properly and had a true passion for it then I could get far.
4) Who are your biggest musical influences?
My biggest musical influences are Griminal, Devlin, Ghetts and Bugzy Malone.
5) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new EP…
I usually find the beat first and then write to it. Sometimes it’s staggered like I might get a random idea and write it down then come back to it later. Next thing you know you've got a full song.
6) What can we expect from your live shows?
You can expect to see nothing like you seen before. The amount of energy and passion I convey in my live performance is one in its own and a true credit to the genre of grime.
7) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
It would be when I did the biggest performance of mylife so far at O2 Brixton academy. It went very, very well and was the first time my mum and brothers had ever seen me perform live.
My mum told me she was proud of me.
8) Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
Yes, I met my biggest musical inspiration and favourite artist Bugzy Malone at a show. He saw me shell down a show, said he liked my sound and we got to have a proper conversation about things. It was all very surreal and I was trying to think of so many things to say and ask before he left.
9) What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
Crossfade - 'So Far Away' // Kendrick Lamar & SZA - 'All The Stars' // William Singe - 'Rush'
10) When can we see you live?
You will see me at a couple of major festivals over the summer, which I’m not allowed to announce yet!
