Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has addressed his controversial speech at The Brit Awards 2014, insisting he was "nervous".

When accepting the accolade for British Album of the Year at the ceremony last Wednesday (February 19), Turner ranted that rock 'n' roll "will never die", continuing: "That rock 'n' roll, it just won't go away.

"It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands it adheres to some of its rules."

Turner added: "But it's always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever."

The 28-year old has since told The Daily Mail that his speech purely came out of the fact that he gets uncomfortable when speaking in front of large crowds.

He explained: "In public, I'm a quiet guy, so doing anything in front of lots of people always makes me nervous.

"I'm known for my music, not how well I deliver a speech. People always assume if you're in a band that's been on the scene for ages that you're going to be really confident, but that's not true at all."
