Politicians have long been despised by students - Nick Clegg famously made uni voters hate him when he went back on his promise of free education, and backed the raising of fees to £9000.

And now, Wallace look-a-like and bad bacon sandwich eater Ed Miliband is expected to drop the news that if we were to vote for Labour, he’d lower university tuition fees by £3000.

The Labour leader's announcement is likely an attempt to get young people to vote for him, trying to get on board a group of voters who the rest of the country don’t think are interested.

But will the drop in fees make university affordable once again?

In an article for the Huffington Post, Chloe Schendel Wilson, President of Bournemouth Students’ Union, writes that students are “far more concerned with day-to-day survival,” struggling with rent rather than the thought of student debt.

Though the drop in fees might excite the ears of young voters for all of about fiveseconds, statistics don’t remain positive. Since the recession - AKA that time in 2008 when suddenlynobody could afford to do anything - young people have seentheir earnings fall by 15%.

It looks like Labour’s biggest opponents in the young person stakes are the Green party, who attract university graduates who are clued up enough to know that voting for Labour probably won’t make them rich quickly.
