Shailene Woodley's Unsure About Fan Reaction To Insurgent Changes

Will fans be happy with the way the film diverges (sorry) from the book?

Bringing a much-loved book to the big screen inevitably means making some changes to the original story, whether it's killing off a character, or turning the climactic scene into a dream sequence (helloThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, we're looking at you).

And with that, comes risking the wrath of die-hard fans who don't want to see their beloved story bastardised beyond all recognition.

While fans of Veronica Roth's dystopian Divergent series will doubtless be thrilled to see Tris and Four's tale continue on the silver screen, they might be a little surprised to see how the film diverges (LOL) from the original novel.

While we won't give away any spoilers, it follows a slightly different path to the book.

But stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James are certain that the differences were necessary to make the movie work.

"I don't know how they'll react, but these changes were necessary to produce a cinematic version of what Veronica had created," Shailene told us.

"The producers and the writers and the director were really keen on retaining the essence and the energy of what Veronica had enthused in her novel," she explained.

"But at the same time there's so much plot and so many characters and new story lines, they had to condense it in order for it to make sense on screen."

The Divergent Series: Insurgent is in UK cinemas now.
