Taipeihas always had an air of mystery.

While it standsboldly as Taiwan's capital city, it's a fair assumption to say that the majority of Westerners wouldn't be super au fait with the region, or even the country.

MTV headed over to the 'beautiful island' (so nicknamed for its old name, 'Formosa', which comes from the compliment), to find out more. It's fair to say we were blown away.

Taiwan’s rich history is laced with both Japanese and Chinese culture but has a spirit of its own. Green landscapes, golden waterfalls, delicious cuisine and a liberal society - with the friendliest local people, proud of their country and eager to share it with tourists.

In five days, weexplored Taiwan’s capital and found a bustling city, breathtaking nature and endless feasts in the night markets. Only in Taipei can you ride the world’s fastest lift up Taipei 101 (the world’s 10th tallest tower) and the following day come within 20ft of Taiwan's tallest dormantvolcano,Seven Star Mountain.

As far as surprising, fascinating, unique and exceptional destinations go, they don't get much better than Taiwan.
