Exclusive: Calvin Harris on Kylie
23 year old Calvin is from Dumfries and recently had a monster hit with Acceptable In The 80s and his new single Girls is already one of our favourite songs of the year. His debut album I Created Disco is due this summer.
Hi Calvin, hows the album coming along?
Calvin: It was done at the end of last year. Essentially its dance music but its not s**t. A lot of dance music is.
What are your influences
Calvin: I used to listen to house music when it was good in 98 but at the turn of the millennium it got s**t. Then I started looking into hip hop like Timbaland and Slick Rick.
Tell us about the songs on the album?
Calvinb: My favourite track on the album is (new single) Girls. Its one of the first tracks I did and its a big dirty beast. Vegas is a big rave tune and Merry Making At My Place is more funky with a great bassline.
Have you filmed the video to Girls?
Calvin: Yeah it was 18 hours of me standing around 26 girls wearing skin tight white costumes. It was f***ing brilliant.
Were you surprised by the success of Acceptable In the 80s?
Calvin: It was a weird, I didnt think it was gonna do so well. A lot of shops didnt stock it so 80 per cent of sales were downloads. Getting to number 10 was pretty cool.
You supported Faithless recently, how was that?
Calvin: I dont enjoy touring, sleeping on a bus with all those boys! Some of the fans on the Faithless tour were too old to dance. The younger people loved it. But out of the 15,000 at each gig about 100 got it.
Did they give you any advice?
Calvin: Yeah Sister Bliss said You can inherit the crown (Calvin laughs)
Have you got any other celebrity fans?
Calvin: Obviously Kylies a bit of a fan. Ive done remixes for CSS and Groove Armada (who Calvin supports this month) too.
Talking of Kylie, how did you end up working on her new album?
Calvin: Her A&R man heard my stuff. Then he got me to remix All Saints as a bit of a test. Then he said Do you fancy working with Kylie? and I said Are you kidding me? She was brilliant to work with.
Tell us about the songs youve made together?
Calvin: Weve recorded one proper track so far and then we were working on a couple more last week. The song sounds like 500 men with their tops off dancing. Its dirty, its sweaty and a bit wrong. And big gay pop of course.
Are you romantically involved? (as newspaper reports claimed last week)
Calvin: Were just friends that story was completely untrue. The height difference is mad. Im 65 shes 51 so it wouldnt work.
Is there anyone else youd like to produce?
Calvin: Kelis would be amazing
What are you ambitions?
Calvin: I dont want to be an underground artist I want to make big tunes that lots of people like. Now Im just waiting for the album to come out- I want to hold a copy and say have that you bastards!
