Demi Lovato and Camila Cabello Both Almost Released ‘The Middle’

Pop works in mysterious ways...

It's no secret that 'The Middle' is one of the biggest pop songs of the year. Since Zedd, Grey and Maren Morris released the major all-star collaboration in January it's been certified Silver in the UK and it's climbed into the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.

It took long to get there though. The single was recorded by 12 female vocalists including Demi Lovato and Camila Cabello.

NO. WE ARE NOT JOKING. 'THE MIDDLE' COULD HAVE BEENA MAJOR HIT FOR BOTH DEMI AND CAMILA.

Stef Johnson and the rest of Monsters and Strangerz (the original production team involved in the single) opened up to Variety about the various stages that the single went through before Maren recorded it. Demi was the first choice to singit in 2017.

And, after recording it, it was actually in the running against 'Sorry Not Sorry' to become the lead single for 'Tell Me You Love Me'. However, according to Stef, Demi backed out because it was "too pop" and she wanted "to go more soulful and urban".

WhileDemi's version would have been epic, this makes sense. It wouldn't have fitted in with Demi's new sound.

Grey and Zedd then hopped on board to add their magic and soon after Camila Cabello was all lined-up to release it last October. Nevertheless, it wasn't meant to be. Stef recalls:“Camila’s out. She doesn’t want any song to overshadow ‘Havana'”.

Again this figures out. 'Havana' was the single that sent Camila into superstardom. It needed its own space. Still, we would love to hear what her demo sounded like. 'The Middle' is a perfect pop song and it would have really suited Camila's voice.

Anne-Marie, Lauren Jauregui, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tove Lo,Bishop Briggs,Bebe Rexha, Lauren Jauregui Daya and Elle King all recorded the song too but, ultimately it was Maren Morris who suited it best. And it's true, her take on it is sublime.

The single has currently racked up over 242 million streams on Spotify alone.

We cannot wait to see what Zedd, Grey and Maren do next. We adore them.
