How To Make Your Tan Last Longer
There's nothing worse than getting a gorgeous summer glow on your holsonly to have your tan fade into oblivion about three hours after you step off the plane home.
If topping it up with fake tan isn't your thing, there's no need to feel bummed out just yet as there's a few sneaky things you can do to make your tan last loads longer - as Janjira skincare expert Hiza Zafar explains below.
1. Prep is key
Prepping your skin pre-sun exposure is really important: remember, a tan gives skin the natural glow that allows it to look even, radiant and healthy, so make sure you prep your skin correctly to avoid looking patchy and streaky. To do this you will need to:
-Exfoliate the body to buff way dull and dry skin. Not only will it leave the skin fresh and soft, it will prolong your tan and allow it to look more even. Janjira’s Thai Lime and Ginger Sugar Milky Body Scrub is gentle enough to use regularly, yet works great for buffing away dull, dry and dead skin cells.
-Any hair removal needs to be done at least 24 hours prior. Shaving and waxing exfoliate the skin, so if you do this after getting a tan, it will look patchy. Doing this ahead of time will prevent your tan from ruining, but also help to slough off dead skin cells, revealing newer and fresher skin.
-Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Do this the day and night before. This will smoothen and soften the skin, giving the tan a smooth and even base to adhere to.
2. On Holiday
The most important thing to do to lengthen the life of your tanis to keep your skin hydrated. The best way to do this is to drink plenty of water and keep moisturising. This will keep your skin from flaking and soothe your skin from any sun damage. Try something like the Janjira Argan Oil Body Butter (£26) for an intense hydrating treatment.
- Make sure you keep wearing SPF, the higher your SPF the longer your tan will last.
- Keep drinking water when you are in the sun to keep your skin hydrated.
- Moisturise as much as possible to stop any flaking.
3. How to stop peeling, fading and uneven fading when you get home
- The same rules as above apply - keep wearing SPF and drinking lots of water to keep skin hydrated. You can also try the below:
- The best way to avoid a patchy tan is to exfoliate. Gentle exfoliation a few times a week will remove dead skin cells evenly, without scrubbing off your tan completely. Follow up with a body lotion to keep skin super moisturised.
SORTED. Now go forth and tan - but be extra careful andmake sure you always wear a suitable SPF. Burning the skin isn't cool: you can end up withpermanent sun damage(and will most likely cause peeling and patchiness of any tan).
