Get to Know: Confidence Man
This week's featured artist is an incredible band from Australia.
Confidence Man have been making waves ever since 2016. With every single they release they push the boundaries of pop and dance and expand their ever-growing loyal following. From 'Bubblegum' to 'Don't You Know I'm In a Band', we're obsessed.
We were lucky enough to catch up with the stars this week.
Check it out below...
1) For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
We're Confidence Man, an electronic dance-pop act from Australia. There's 4 of us - Reggie Goodchild, Clarence McGuffie, Sugar Bones and me, Janet Planet. We love a good bassline, a sassy groove, and too-close-to-home spoken vocals.
2) Describe your sound in three words…
Dirty, cool and smart.
3) Who inspired you to start a career in music?
David Byrne. He shows how music can be a visual thing, a full experience rather than limited to just sound. And also the way he writes about the little things. I like that, it's always more detailed than trying to cover something too big or important. I feel like I actually get to know his character and nothing is predictable. Or it's predictable on purpose.
4) Who are your biggest musical influences?
LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada, The Chemical Brothers, The Spice Girls, Scissor Sisters, Basement Jaxx...
5) Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new music…
Reggie, Clarence, Sugar and I did most of the record in our home studio in Melbourne. We did other bits andpiecesat our old house in Brisbane and the rest out in the Australian bush. We're a bit weird in the way that we do all the production, writing and recording at the same time... and the four of us write together. It gets pretty loud, so we're lucky that we've known each other for so long because you can't hold back. You know if you've come up with a bad idea when it gets no response, and you know you've made a good one when everyone starts yelling. That's usually the way our writing process is, lots of arguments and people trying to steal the microphone. But it works somehow.
6) What can we expect from your live shows?
Satanicbeekeepers, synchroniseddancing, fake faces and deep beats you can thrust to.
7) What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Playing Glastonbury was pretty crazy for us. At Crow's Nest people were screaming the bassline to 'Boyfriend', and Clarence fell off the stage. People held him up and he kept playing.
8) Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
I played cards with Dizzee Rascal once. I heckled him a bit too hard and I won. He was pretty unhappy. His bodyguard was also super scared of the Australian native ants. When he got bitten he made Dizzee leave because it was dangerous.
9) What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
Learning to fly by Tom Petty.
10) When can we see you live?
We're coming over for UK summer this year. So we'll be playing a whole bunch of festivals as well as our own club shows. Our first show is at Village Underground on 30th May. It's gonna be a hot one!
