Brandon Flowers Kills It At London's Brixton Academy, While Joywave Provide The 'Somebody New'

A stellar performance from The Killers' frontman and his awesome support act...

With his second solo album The Desired Effect having dropped less than a week earlier, Brandon Flowers faced a Friday night crowd at Brixton Academy, his second evening playing the iconic London venue. While whispers of a very special guest lingered in the air from the night before, it was clear that The Killers' frontman was going to surprise those hardcore fans who had attended both shows, with a varied and extended setlist. Hey, it's the weekend, right?

Before the ever-charismatic Mr Flowers hit the stage, Joywave well and truly warmed up the crowd, packing out the house to volumes many support acts could only dream of. Fresh from playing two of their own headline shows, the Rochester five-piece smashed through future hits from their debut album, How Do You Feel Now?

Frontman Daniel Armbruster provided easy banter with the crowd, while synth-heavy track 'In Clover' had everyone bopping along, and 'Now' had more than enough similarities to Brandon Flowers' own music that we're sure Joywave converted a few of their spectators in to fans.

Finishing with new single 'Somebody New' and the epic 'Tongues', Joywave left the stage to rapturous applause, before joining the crowd to watch Brandon in all his glory.

Just over thirty minutes later and the man of the hour appeared, clad in one of his signature sequined jackets, to the sound of new album track 'Untangled Love'.

Already sensing that the majority of the audience had bought in to The Desired Effect and its '80s-inspired sound, the number of songs that provoked a full-audience sing-a-long was impressive, perhaps aided by the videos Flowers has been drip-feeding his adoring fans on YouTube in the lead-up to his record's release.

'Can't Deny My Love' came next, followed by classic 'Crossfire', the juxtaposition of new and old tracks showing just how much Brandon's musicality has developed since his last solo album, Flamingo. However, the deafening cheers from the crowd proved there's still a huge appetite for his older material, with The Killers' fans in the room going wild for updated versions of 'Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine', 'Human' and 'Mr Brightside'. There is no escaping it: Brandon Flowers IS Mr Brightside.

A four-song encore revealed that Thursday night's special guest - Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders - was back for more, dueting with Brandon on her band's hit 'Don't Get Me Wrong' and his 'Between Me And You'.

The determined 'I Can Change' and 'Still Want You' saw the show out on a massive high, with Brandon thanking London for making him feel at home, and London thanking Brandon for continuing to make music for lonely hearts, hopeless romantics and those euphoric moments when all you want to do is dance. Seriously, Mr Flowers; thank you.
