Up for the prize are three British divas and two indie bands whove scored big hits stateside this year.

Coldplays Violet Hill and Ting Tings Shut Up And Let Me Go are both nominated.

While Duffys Warwick Avenue, Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis and Estelles American Boy will also compete for the award.

The VMAs take place in Los Angeles on September 7 and will be hosted by former MTV UK presenter Russell Brand.
