The Neighbourhood Drop Cheery ‘R.I.P. 2 My Youth’ Video
‘Sweater Weather’ superstars The Neighbourhood have returned with a typically dark video for their new, hip-hop influenced track, ‘R.I.P. 2 My Youth’.
Shot in their trademark moody black and white style by legendary director Hype Williams (who’s worked with little known artists such asKanye, Jay-Z, Pharrell, Beyoncé) the video shows the very stylish boys from California playing in some shady underground tunnels, as well as lead singer Jesse Rutherford writing around in a coffin…as you do.
‘R.I.P. 2 My Youth’, as you might expect, features some of Jesse’s darkest lyrics to date, as he sings ‘And you can play this at my funeral/Wrap me up in Chanel inside my coffin/Might go to Hell and there ain't no stopping’. It’s a track about not apologising for who you are as a person, speaking the truth, and the harsh reality of growing up.
When the band debuted the track live, Jesse said:
“To be honest I think the lyrics kind of describe it the best. I think just hearing it is probably the best way to explain it. I feel like it could really go for all of us as far as what has happened in our life in the past couple years and the awesome opportunities we’ve been able to have. I think kind of reflecting back on it—growing up per se, whether you want to or not. Sometimes your youth—some people have it taken away from them earlier and some people get to wait a little longer before you have to grow up, but either way the world kind of hits you.”
Style icon Jesse has gone all out for the video, dressing up in a jazzy monochrome jacket and showing off his extensive tattoo collection, although he keeps most of his clothes on this time – remember their video for ‘Afraid’, where he literally went all out naked?!
‘R.I.P. 2 My Youth’ is getting us seriously excited for The Neighbourhood’s second album, 'Wiped Out!' which is due to drop on 30th October, following their successful 2013 debut with 'I Love You'. UK fans can catch them playing Heaven in London on 10th November.
