Selena Gomez Speaks Out To Defend 13 Reasons Why After Backlash From Mental Health Groups
Not everyone is totally into13 Reasons Why. The incredible Netflix show has received some criticism from mental health groups worried about the graphic nature of some of the content and how it could effect younger audiences.
If you haven’t seen the show, this isn’t really a spoiler (the whole thing is about the tapes left behind by disturbed teen Hannah Baker after shekillsherself), but the scene which actually shows Hannah taking her own life has come under particular criticism.
Now, Selena Gomez - who’s a producer on the show - has defended the series and the dark subjects it explores.
“We stayed very true to the book and that’s initially what [author] Jay Asher created was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story and I think that’s what we wanted to do,” the told Associated press.
“We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] gonna come no matter what. It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing,” she added.
