Becks Speeds In For Olympic Spectacular

Footballer joins a host of stars for the London 2012 opening ceremony...

David Beckham might not have made the Team GB football squad but he took a starring role at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony yesterday (27 July).

The former England captain got his moment in the spotlight, accompanying the Olympic torch in a speedboat along the River Thames towards the packed stadium.

Having done his James Bond bit, Becks passed the flame to five-time Olympic medal-winner Sir Steve Redgrave, before seven young up-and-coming sports stars were given the honour of lighting the flame.

The spectacular Danny Boyle-designed ceremony included everything from Sir Kenneth Brannagh reciting Shakespeare to Harry Potter author JK Rowling reading from Peter Pan and Rowan Atkinson in a comedy skit as Mr Bean - all played out to a soundtrack that included classics by The Beatles, the Sex Pistols, David Bowie and The Prodigy.

Dizzee Rascal, Emeli Sandé and the Arctic Monkeys also took to the stage to perform live during the ceremony.

But the surprise of the night came as The Queen herself appeared in a cameo role alongside James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

As the secretly-filmed sequence ended, the pair (played by stunt performers) parachuted into the Olympic stadium before Her Majesty took her seat at the ceremony.

The night ended with Sir Paul McCartney singing a rousing rendition of Hey Jude.
