Nicole Scherzinger 'Big Fat Lie' - First Listen!
Big Fat Lie marks a return to form for Nicole Scherzinger.
Produced with the help of The-Dream and Tricky, the album offers a mish-mash of R&B throwbacks and catchy pop tunes.
For Scherzy, the backstory for this LP goes much deeper, after publicising herbattle with bulimia, the singer tipped that she would use the record as a vessel to address a few demons, telling Digital Spy in an interview: “I think we all have our own big fat lies.”
Your Love, the album’s lead single and opening track would have you completely contradict Big Fat Lie’s backstory. Nicole’s vocals are infectious, catchy and the song is a tried and tested crowd pleaser, see her performance at Isle Of MTV Maltaif more proof is needed.
From the top floor house party to the secret underground club, Nicole pulls in the help of T.I. for Electric Blue. Sultry R&B meets Pharrell Williams/Neptunes inspired production. There are hints of Janet Jackson in Nicole’s vocals and the tracks composition, whether intentional or not.
Third track On The Rocks is an obvious choice for the album’s next single, seeing Nicole “taking shots”, at who? We can’t be sure. It’s a typical Scherzy track, the no nonsense pop diva makes it clear on this record.
Big Fat Lie makes the switch back from sweet danceable pop to beat heavy ballad. The title track seems to bring to surface the evident aforementioned big fat truths. Nicole’s biographical interpretation and two fingers up to celebrity culture sums up the premise of this album. She sings: “If I’m living such a wonderful high why don’t I feel alive,” taking shots at her appearance and perception of herself.
Run, the eleventh and final track on Big Fat Lie – also the first US single from the album – is a somber piano ballad complete with and even more somber vocals over this track where the singer offers advice to the next broken heart.
It’s a brave move to put your life and insecurities on a record, but Scherzy proves why she’s the woman for the task.
Big Fat Lie is due for release on October 20.
