Get To Know: Blaenavon

As the Hampshire band prepare the release of their debut album, we find out a little bit more about the trio...

This week's featured band we're casting our eye on is Hampshire trio Blaenavon. The guys, who've been friends since they were teenagers, havesupported the like of Foals, Bloc Party, Warpaint and more, and now their debut album 'That's Your Lot' is out tomorrow.

In our 'Get To Know' interview, lead singer Bengivesus an insight into their world.....

1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…

We're three young romantic pilgrims from the Hampshire hills who make music for the masses. Frankie on bass, Harris on the drums and my name is Ben - guitar and vox.

2. Describe your sound in three words…

Progressive alternative rock

3. Who inspired you to start a career in music?

We've been playing together since I can remember... But a Manchester band called WU LYF set all our minds on fire around 2010/2011. Really massive stuff, so inspiring, heavy pop - we wanted to be as important to people as they were to us.

4. Who are your biggest musical influences?

I'd say Elliott Smith is the main reason I've become the type of songwriter I am. His sincerity and softness of turn of phrase made me rethink my whole lyrical game, whilst he's the ultimate guitarist and chord-master. I'm very grateful. I love him.

5. Tell us about the writing and recording process for your new music…

Our songs start with lil acoustic, kinda folky demos from my bedroom. I jammed out 'Orthodox Man' for a while and then took it to the boys. They brought the funk. Then we arranged it, rehearsed it and recorded a second demo, which we sent to Jim (Abbiss - producer). He sorted it out with us, perfected it, chose the sounds and we waxed a hottie. That's generally how it goes down.

6. What can we expect from your live shows?

Absolute carnage. Hip-thrusts, hair, hauntology. Tunes to melt in your mouth. We give it all we've got and then some. You've gotta put on a proper show or your music is worthless.

7. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Either our rip-roaring headline show at London's Scala or the two shows in New York. Life-affirming experiences for us. Afterwards we felt like a band that people properly believe in - kids saying we've changed their lives. That's about as good as it gets.

8. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?

I met Diplo at Leeds festival and was pretty starstruck because he actually had faders for fingers.

9. What’s on your iPod/playlists that people wouldn’t expect?

I only listen to Lorde.

10. When can we see you live?

Heaven, London on the 7th April. It's to die for.
