Emily Faulstich Explains It All: The Wildfox Co-Creator On Her Collaboration With Oh My Love & Designing A Brand New Line
Wildfox co-creator, serial doodler, major Harry Potter fan: Emily Faulstich is our kind of girl. Currently residing in Carrie Bradshaw’s New York neighbourhood, she’s the definition of a dream babe, which she translates effortlessly into the illustrations for her new four-piece collaboration with East London label Oh My Love.
We sat down for tea with Emily at London’s own Barbie Dreamhouse, The Gallery at Sketch, to peek some of her illustrations and hear all about her latest projects.
MTV Style: You parted ways with Wildfox a little while ago, but how does it feel to be swapping those California girl vibes for a collaboration with East London’s Oh My Love?
Emily Faulstich: It’s a dream, because London is my favourite city in the world. Nicole [Levy, Oh My Love’s PR] reached out to me on social media, because she liked my illustration style, and thought that it would pair well. It was quite an easy translation, because Oh My Love is such a fun and young brand, very colourful and feminine, and that’s where I’m going with my stuff.
MTV Style: We’ve become obsessed with your illustrations – when did you start drawing and finding your style?
Emily: Actually just last year. I’d always sketch out stuff at Wildfox for shirts, but I didn’t really work out this exact style ’til last year, when I came to New York and had a lot of free time on my hands. I’d be sitting at cafés, documenting day-to-day stuff, just funny little characters. There are so many things in my brain, so it’s nice to get these little creatures on paper. Everything I draw, because of my pens, is in neons and pinks and tropical colours. That worked well for the Oh My Love pieces.
MTV Style: Do you have a favourite of the characters that you’ve created?
Emily: [Flips through her notebook] This little girl here, named Ella, she’s cute. She’s based on me as a kid. Then I draw these weird little guys, that I just call ‘Little Guys’, because I don’t know what else to call them. The funny thing is, I don’t even really like cats, but I always draw cats because it’s easy. They come out cute, but I’m much more of a dog person.
MTV Style: When you were still working on Wildfox constantly, what was the most fun collection you and Kimberley [Gordon, Emily’s Wildfox co-founder] worked on?
Emily: It all depends on the shoot I think. We were very much designing for the shoot we had in our heads, and then we would design T-shirts around it. I loved the Marie Antoinette one. We started so small and it’s so funny to think of our first shoot. It was actually with Arizona Muse, who is now a huge supermodel, but back then she had just been discovered as a new face. She was our very first model. The Hawaii one with Charlotte Free and her pink hair was fun and tropical. I don’t think I ever had one I didn’t like!
MTV Style: Do you think now that you’ve collaborated with Oh My Love you’ll maybe look at starting a new line of your own?
Emily: Yeah! I’m gonna start a new line this year, of graphic T-shirts for women and girls, but it’ll be a lifestyle label too. Not like accessories, but home stuff, blankets and towels. Basically stuff you would have in a dream beach house!
MTV Style: If you were going to pick a girl to dress in your new designs, who would it be?
Emily: Oh my gosh that’s hard… Khaleesi from Game Of Thrones. With her Game Of Thrones hair. Brooke Shields in Blue Lagoon. And people I really respect like Lena Dunham, Miranda July… and Emma Watson. Definitely Emma Watson.
