'Despacito' Ties Mariah Carey's 21-Year Record For Longest American Number One
There’s no stopping ‘Despacito’.
Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s inescapable smash hit has made history, becoming one of the longest-running number ones in the U.S.
‘Despacito’ hit the top spot back in May after Justin Bieber joined for a Spanglish remix, bringing the song to the West after dominating Latin pop.
It spends its 16th week at number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week, tying a 21-year record held by Mariah Carey.
The legendary diva made history with ‘One Sweet Day’, her timeless collaboration with Boyz II Men, when it ruled the charts for 16 weeks back in 1995.
A few artists have came close since then but no one ever passed the 14 week mark, including Mariah herself when her 2005 hit ‘We Belong Together’ ended its reign after 14 weeks.
This is a massive deal in itself but a HUGE moment for Latin music, with Fonsi saying, “This is historic! Thank you guys for all your support.”
The original is the most watched video on YouTube with over 3.4 BILLION views, while the Bieber remix has over half a billion views.
It’s also the world’s most streamed song of all the with 4.6 billion streams. This song’s success is just mind-blowing.
So, will Luis Fonsi and co. beat Mariah and set a new record of 17 weeks?
Billboard report that’s very unlikely now that Taylor Swift has returned, but I guess we’ll wait and see…
