What is the history of tarot?

Well, Jayne told us to Google it so we gave it a go. Although tarot cards were often used as regular gaming cards, using them for fortune telling dates back to the 1700s. Jean-Baptiste Alliette wrote his first book on the tarot in 1791, called “Etteilla, ou L’art de lire dans les cartes,” meaning “Etteilla, or the Art of Reading Cards.” He was responsible for teaching people how to read them for mystical use.

Can anyone read tarot cards?

“Yes anyone can read them but if they are good at it is another question. I started seeing spirits when I was six or seven so I knew I had a gift,” Jayne tells us.

How do you know what the cards are telling you?

“Some decks come with a guide to the cards but intuition is most important when it comes to reading them. You should feel what they are saying.”

Are there specific cards to use?

“There are so many different decks out there so it’s really your choice. I use Oceanic Tarot as they are my chosen deck, but most readers have several ones to choose from.”

How do you know if someone is legit?

“It’s like anything else, always go by recommendation or read reviews online. Also if you meet the reader and feel what they say is incorrect then always be open and voice that.”

What should you ask?

“I feel that the reader should connect to your question for you, they should sense what you are there for. I always ask at the end if the client has any questions so they can pick up on anything I missed. But it’s your reading so ask anything that’s on your mind; past, present or future.”

Is it just about fortune telling or can you connect to the dead?

“Anyone can connect with energy via the cards but you have to be a medium or clairvoyant to connect to spirit.”

Does it matter if you believe in psychic powers?

“It is more important to be open to what might happen as you are more relaxed and the energies will flow better.”

What happened when we did it?

We were mind blown. Fact. After searching out Jayne in her corner of Selfridges, we piled into a tiny room with three chairs and a table. Jayne sat us down and immediately launched into a reading. She revealed things about our past, present and future all with varying degrees of accuracy. But the things she got right she was absolutely spot on. We left a little perturbed, especially as she’d told me I would get pregnant if I wasn’t careful and that my grandmother had a message for my mum. So we went off to smell some Kate Spade candles to calm ourselves down.
