Kanye West has won the Ultimate Urban award at the MTV EMAs - his first ever award at the ceremony.

In 2006 he was denied the best video statue by Justice and famously took to the stage to protest that the award was his.

This time on stage the rapper was more gentlemanly telling the crowd: "Thank you to MTV, this award is for my mother. I love all my fans- thank you."

Earlier the superstar performed his new single Love Lockdown and helped out Estelle on their number one single American Boy.

Speaking exclusively to MTV News after the show, Kanye explained why he finished his performance with a picture of Barack Obama, saying "He's the number one American Boy!"
